The Hawaiian custom of gifting a lei to honor someone for a special occasion has continued to grow for graduation. Leis are a great way for anyone to join in with the graduate in celebrating their special day, even if they can’t make it to the graduation itself. It is often not uncommon to see graduates adorned with multiple leis given to them by various friends or family members all who want to bestow upon them special blessings and congratulations. Receiving a lei is an honor and should respect the culture from which this tradition comes from. Recipients should bow their head so that the lei can be placed over it and then worn with pride!
During graduation season, our orchid leis are made by the experts in Hawaii and shipped directly to us but there are many different kinds of leis, too! There are candy leis, ornate ribbon and paper leis and, of course, money leis. There is just something special about a fresh floral lei, though, that is perfect for marking this momentous occasion.
Caring for your Lei
Leis require special care whether you pick one up at our store or have it delivered to the
home. With the right care, your lei can last longer and stay looking fresh for several days until it is ready to be worn. A lei from Dandelions Flowers & Gifts will come packaged in a breathable plastic bag that the lei is meant to be stored in. Then, place it in the refrigerator after removing all ethylene-producing fruit & vegetables (apples, apricots, avocado, cantaloupe, honeydew, kiwi, mango, nectarines, papaya, peaches, pears, plums, tomatoes). The ideal temperature for an orchid lei is between 50 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit. They do not like to be too hot or too cold!!
On the day you are to wear your lei, it doesn’t hurt to give it a mist of water for a little extra hydration but, don’t forget…be careful with those hugs! Most importantly enjoy the bit of tropical joy from the islands on a very special day!
