Lisa and Mark at Lewis & Clark Catering

It’s been a while since I’ve been able to post about some of our weddings due to issues I was having with our site. Ugh. But now that it is resolved I am back to highlighting some incredible couples and their joyous nuptials!

I was honored to create the floral designs for Lisa and Mark back in March at Lewis and Clark Catering here in Eugene. I get to gab with Lisa every 6-8 weeks since she is my hairstylist so it was fun to hear all about the wedding planning from the time of engagement up until THE DAY. Lisa and Mark are a laid-back and fun couple and wanted their wedding to feel intimate and sophisticated without being too hoighty-toity (is that a real word?) or stuffy.

The day was perfect and it even managed to stay dry which is a small miracle for a March wedding in Eugene, OR. It rains a lot here. The colors were simple with a black and white theme and a punch of turquoise to add a little life. The bride was beautiful, the wedding was sweet and the reception (so I heard) was fun, fun, fun! These gorgeous images were captured by MJ’s Photography here in Eugene- thank you for sharing! If you haven’t met Michelle of MJ’s Photography…she’s awesome. Fun, professional and talented. Now to the wedding!

Instead of a traditional arch, Lisa wanted something more elegant and modern to designate the ceremony area. Sleek white pillars held tall flower arrangements of white blooms including snapdragons, hydrangea, trailing clematis and white Tibet roses. Post-ceremony they were transferred indoors to decorate the reception area.

Each reception centerpiece differed slightly but all were white flowers with either black or white rocks in the bottom or square vases. The couple’s sweetheart table flowers was a trio of vases including the white anemones with black centers that Lisa loved.

Still Trending: Vintage Lace & Burlap

As we head into the 2014 wedding season the projected trends are becoming more concrete in terms of colors, themes and details for weddings. Lace and burlap is still extremely popular among brides whose weddings fall into the following categories: vintage, country chic, rustic, barn weddings and romantic but casual outdoor affairs.

Burlap was the #1 stem wrap of choice for all the weddings I did last year. Bridesmaid’s bouquets were wrapped with burlap while most of the bridal bouquets were a combination of burlap and lace treatments. I also incorporated the burlap in corsages and boutonnieres so that the whole look was cohesive. Burlap can be used as table runners, banners or wrapped around vases. Adding lace to any of these adds romance and softens the look instantly.

Nature’s Rainbow Wedding Flowers

Oregon has such natural beauty and it creates a gorgeous, green backdrop for many a wedding. For this reason, and the ongoing trend of wildflower & colorful wedding flowers, many brides are choosing mixed colors for their wedding. This transpires as either color groupings or mixed colors in all the bouquets and arrangements.

These mixed color weddings are best for outdoor weddings since they have a more casual, eclectic feel. The mixed wildflower style pairs well with popular burlap and lace and works for both modern & colorful weddings or a bride who is going for more of a vintage feel.

Purple Flowers for Weddings

Purple was traditionally the color of royalty and its rich color is not lost on today’s brides. From pale periwinkle to deep eggplant, purple has a myriad of shades which lend themselves to a variety of looks for your wedding. Since Pantone announced Radiant Orchid as the 2014 Color of the Year, purple will be taking center stage in the upcoming year. Radiant Orchid is a gorgeous medium purple with fuschia and pink undertones it combines will with a variety of colors.

Many brides try to match their flowers exactly to the bridesmaid’s dresses or linen colors but I always recommend a different route. Choosing a mixtures of shades in the color palette will make everything look more luxurious, textured and visible. If the flowers are all exactly the same shade it will look like a big ball of one color without any dimension. Let your florist incorporate varying shades for the most effective use of flowers and a final look that will be much more luxurious and less DIY.

Vintage White Chapel Wedding

This was a very special wedding for an absolutely adorable couple who could not be any sweeter. Rachael and Jack have known each other since kindergarten and have been in each others lives ever since, although not as a couple until later in life. Having known someone for such an extended period of time certainly seems like a good foundation for a strong marriage. Thank you to Jay Eads Photography for the beautiful images captured here. To see more images visit Jay’s blog at jayeads.com.

Rachael wanted a vintage feel for her wedding. They chose the quaint Creswell Presbyterian Church for the ceremony with the reception following at Emerald Valley Country Club in Creswell. Rachael’s dress had custom sleeves added to the already beautiful lace gown and it looked amazing on her petite frame. She gave her bridesmaid free reign to choose their own bridesmaid dress in shades of green which created an eclectic feel. Her nephew ring-bearers even wore little knickers and suspenders! So cute.

Rachael knew exactly what she wanted when it came to flowers. She requested a “picked from a field” look that was primarily seasonal greenery and grasses with touches of blooming flowers. In the week leading up to the wedding I spent a lot of time scouring Lane County to find a full assortment of greenery, grasses and herbs to design with. She wanted lavender in the bridesmaid’s bouquets and large arrangements but since the wedding was in August, past lavender season, I babied the lavender plants in our flower fields to make sure I had fresh lavender to use.

purple and green wedding bouquetShades of green bridesmaids dresses with loose, field-inspired bouquets {Jay Eads Photography}

Her inspiration picture for the bridesmaids included crab apples but she wanted something purple. I found these perfect baby crab apples that I tinted purple to create a similar look. For her wedding bouquet, Rachael wanted something the size and style of Kate Middleton’s famous bridal bouquet but with grasses and just touches of delicate white flowers.

Shocks of wheat and bundles of lavender (a bridal DIY project) completed the look for the entrance to the church and at the reception. Large, meadow-inspired arrangements were transferred from wicker baskets at the church to wood boxes for buffet table arrangements.

Some of the other details that made this wedding standout:

  • Bride and groom silhouette images on guest book table, over head table and on ceremony programs

  • The vintage burgundy car, owned by Rachael’s father, was the perfect getaway car. Classic and vintage, it couldn’t have been more ideal. (see the first blog picture)

It was such a joy to design the flowers for this wedding for dear friends and turn Rachael’s classic, vintage vision into reality. Congratulations, Rachael and Jackson!emerald valley golf and resort creswell oregon

Yellow Wedding Ideas

Pantone Freesia is part of their Spring Fashion Report for 2014. Shades of yellow have been popular wedding colors and that trend will continue into this summer. Yellow and grey will continue to be seen for modern, chic weddings while the yellow & blue combination is often chosen for quaint, country weddings. For a spring wedding, pair yellow with paler shades of pink, green or lavender for a pastel palette or combine it with other bold colors of tangerine orange, coral or aqua for a bright, cheerful affair.

Backyard Wedding at Fern Ridge Lake

Sometimes home is the best place to get married. A family venue holds emotional significance and is VERY budget friendly. My friends, Justin and Jennifer, were married on her family’s property that sat lakeside on Fern Ridge Lake in Veneta, OR.

lake wedding oregon

The bride and groom wanted a very family-friendly wedding and even encouraged guests to bring their swimsuits in the wedding invitation! The ceremony area was created with hay bale seating and wood logs down the aisle that held vases of flowers. A beautiful focal point was made using ribbons strung between two trees that overlooked the lake. A breeze picked up about the time the ceremony began which made the ribbons blow and looked very pretty.

ribbon ceremony

hay bale seating

The reception had long feasting tables with hay bale seating. The bride and groom had painted beer and liquor bottles in shades of silver, gold, taupe and brown and each held 1 or 2 blossoms of orange flowers and ferns. The color scheme was really important to them because the bride’s family had been heavily affected by cancer so they chose the orange to represent leukemia. Mini gerbera daisies, “Blah Blah Blah” dahlias, “Flame” mini calla lilies, “Peach Peony” garden roses, orange spray roses, and local maidenhair fern and sword fern were used for the ceremony and reception flowers.

It was a pleasure to decorate the area with flowers and attend the wedding. The bride and groom had gone up to Alaska a few weeks before and caught their own salmon that they served for dinner which was delicious! Justin left most of the wedding decisions up to Jennifer- his only caveat was that he got to choose what he wore. So…the groom and groomsmen kept it comfy and casual in shorts and button-up shirts. The bride and bridesmaids all carried brooch bouquets that glittered and shone against the rustic backdrop. Congratulations, again, Justin and Jennifer!

Light Pink Wedding

We often get requests from brides for peonies throughout the year. Unfortunately, peonies have a short growing season locally. The season is extended slightly through farms that grow peonies in Alaska and South America. So for the bride who wants a peony look but can’t afford the $15-$30 a stem price of off-season peonies, garden roses provide an excellent alternative.

white and pink peony wedding

This wedding had a very pink theme! The bridal bouquet and bridesmaids bouquets were pink and white and the flower girls carried sweet pink pomanders. Helga Piaget garden roses, Mariatheresa garden spray roses and blush pink ranunculus created a soft pink look. The bridal bouquet was collared with silver dusty miller. and had locket pictures attached to the stem wrap. Very pretty and feminine!
